RN First Assistant (RNFA) assists surgeon during a surgical procedure and carries out functions that assist in performing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
RNFA is an experienced perioperative nurse who has acquired additional necessary knowledge, skills and judgment within the clinical practice.
RNFA practices at the direction of the surgeon.

Responsibilities:
1.
Practice peri-operative nursing and has acquired the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon, through organized instruction and supervised practice.
2.
Practice under the direct supervision of the surgeon and does not concurrently function as a scrub nurse.
3.
Performs peri-operative nursing practices, including, although not limited to tissue handling, providing exposure, suturing, and providing hemostasis.
4.
Preoperative familiarity and assessment of the patient.
5.
Assistance with positioning, prepping and draping of the patient.
6.
Application of the principles of asepsis and infection control.
7.
Provision of exposure through appropriate use of treatments, retractors, suctioning and sponging.
8.
Application of surgical dressings.
9.
Assistance with patient transfer from the OR.
10.
Post-Operative assessment of the patient.
11.
Acts as a mentor/resource to team members.
12.
Stays current on surgical techniques and procedures, and coordiates patient care with clinical manger.
13.
Perform other related duites as necessary.
14.
Assist RN circulator wherever possible.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
Licensed and a currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut EXPERIENCE 3-5 years in OR nursing.
CNOR certified.
Successful completion of an RNFA program that meets the AORN recommended Educational Standards for the RN FA.
ACLS preferred.
SPECIAL SKILLS Established scrubbing skills with strong knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative techniques related to first assisting.
Knowledge and skills in applying principles of aseptic technique.
Ability to perform harmoniously as a member of the operative team.
Ability to recognize safety hazards and to initiate appropriate preventative and corrective action.
Intraoperative nursing skills in suturing, handling tissue, using instruments, providing exposure, and providing hemostasis.
Additional Information:
Experience with Plastics and Breast cases required.
Ambulatory experience required.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
